Hello,
I just dropped my iPhone on the ground, fortunately nothing serious, the screen is not damaged, just a few scratches on the case. However, there's a big problem: I can't unlock my iPhone, the bar is not responding, and neither is the entire touchscreen. It's impossible to access any application!! My touchscreen only responds when I want to turn it off with the menu bar "turn off"!! I've tried everything: turning it off and then turning it back on normally, reloading it by pressing the home button and the lock button simultaneously. I haven't removed the battery and I don't know how to do it, could that solve my problem?
Please help me, I'm lost!!Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello everyone,
I had exactly the same problem:
My iPhone took a little fall, nothing too serious, but the touchscreen no longer works...
After a restart, I can't tap "unlock" to enter my PIN.
However, the rest of the touchscreen works.
The worst part is that the touchscreen part of "unlock" doesn't work; but when I go to "Emergency Calls" and press the keys on the keypad that are at the same height as the "unlock" button, it works there!!!
---> The touchscreen is therefore not defective
I thought it was a software problem, and I performed a complete restore to 3.01
This didn’t fix anything. Still the same problem, can't unlock the SIM.
The "unlock" button doesn't work, while the rest of the touchscreen does...
---> So it’s not a software problem
Then I remembered that the iPhone has a sensor in the upper left that disables the touchscreen when you bring it close to your ear. I have a feeling that this sensor is defective due to the fall.
So I turned off the iPhone for the umpteenth time. I tapped the area at the upper left near the ear sensor several times. I restarted the iPhone and "HooôÔôoo Miracle" it works perfectly again.
It was the ear sensor that was causing the problem!!!
You can try the following experiment: If you cover the sensor at the upper left, you will see that most of the touchscreen functions of your iPhone are disabled (even without being on a call)
I hope this tip can help you if you encounter problems with the touchscreen.
See you!

Being the owner of 2 iPhones: the first one is a 2G U.S 16GB with a JB version, my second is a 3GS 16GB. So, I can answer you about the situation of the sensor(s). For the 2G, it's on the upper part just above the hole for the speaker, and for the 3G, indeed at the top left... You can spot them by playing with the reflection. (No, I'm not a secret agent in another life.. ;-)
However, like you, my 2G won't unlock anymore despite my reboots and a few taps... In short, HELP!!
pff I tried tapping the sensor and nothing happened snif goodness gracious
